Lesson #1 - Fundamentals - The Stance . . . In order to have a consistent, reliable, straight stroke, you mustfirst have a solid, stable base from which to work from. Where you place your feet will determine how solidyour base is. Determine where the aim line is, place your back foot under the butt cap of your cue, anywherefrom 45 to 90 degrees to your cue. Move your front foot forward and to the side enough to allow you to getlow over your cue and place your front foot parallel or slightly inward to your cue. Make sure your feet are atleast shoulder width apart. You can lock your knees or you can bend them, whichever is more comfortable, but remember, you need to get your head down low over your cue. Your head is aligned over the cue so thatyour vision center is directly over the cue. In the shooting position, your bridge arm is locked at the elbow andyour bridge hand is approximately 6 to 10 inches behind the cue ball. Your back arm will play a major role inhow straight your stroke is. Grip the cue lightly and place it so that your back forearm is perpendicular to thefloor at the moment your tip impacts the cue ball. Your wrist is straight and your thumb is pointing downward.Your head, wrist, elbow and shoulder should all be in the plane of the cue. Pay close attention to your elbow, you may have a tendency to allow your elbow to drift to one side or the other. It's important to follow throughafter striking the cue ball, the proper placement of your grip hand will facilitate a good follow through. Youshould feel stable and secure in this position, if not, adjust yourself until you do.
